Rearing Facilities

All of our carp are on-grown in outdoor ponds. Whilst carp can be grown very quickly in re-circulated systems we are very much of the opinion that it is not of benefit to the fish to push them too 'hard'. The ponds are fed by naturally occurring springs around the sites so that we have the first use of the water. This is essential to us, eliminating the risk of pollution, diseases or parasites coming down from upstream or other fisheries.

We understand that high quality fish require pristine water conditions and plenty of space if they are to achieve their full potential on our farm. We want our carp to grow well and without stress while they are with us. With this in mind we stock at levels lower than many other farms ensuring their environment is optimal at all times during the rearing process. Additionally, all our ponds where we produce fish upto C3 age class are covered by anti predator netting to ensure the fish are stress-free whilst onsite.

Following the expansion of the business in recent years, to meet the demand for more VSF fish, our CEFAS approved sites now extend to well over 50 acres of water and nearly 50 ponds that vary from 100m2 fry ponds right through to lakes in excess of 4 acres where we produce fish of 4 summers and older.

The autumn of 2012 saw the completion of our new fish holding facility after much painstaking work by the Chandlers. This has not only tripled our holding space but also allowed us to further reduce the amount of handling our fish undergo when being harvested allowing our fish to arrive in even better condition. In addition to the holding tanks a new spawning suite, dry stores, hatchery, lab and drying room has completed the facility.

As part of our precise management of the various ponds within our sites we ensure that, when each pond is harvested during the course of the winter, it is drained fully and then sterilised using hydrated lime which disinfects the pond prior to the introduction of any new fish for the following season.

When possible we keep the pond drained for as long as possible as the frost and drying action helps in breaking down any silt along with further sterilising the pond.
